Mrs. Wesley Oliver Dies Sunday Morning Following Several Years of Illness
Whole Community Mourns Passing of Beloved and Talented Young Mother One of the most beautiful characters this community has even known passed to the Great Beyond Sunday morning at 10:45 when Mrs. Wesley Oliver died in her home after an illness that had confined her to her home for a period of several years. Josephine Bertine Jacobson was born on the farm home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Jacobson, Herro, two miles east of Rutland, this state. The date is given as October 19th, 1887. Her parents have both passed away. Her mother died when Mrs. Oliver was about nine years of age. Her father died about three weeks ago.
Mrs. Oliver received her grade school education in the country schools near Rutland. Later she came to Wahpeton. After living in this city a short time she entered the Wahpeton Bible School as a student from which she later graduated. While attending the Bible School Mrs. Oliver did considerable work among the poor of the city and often cheered families with her beautiful singing and music. After she had graduated from the Wahpeton Bible School Mrs. Oliver entered the State School of Science. Here she entered the Commercial Department classes and later graduated. Shortly after she had completed her education she was employed in the offices of a Breckenridge surgeon and also in a bank in that city. On May 15th, 1914, Josephine Bertine Jacobson was married to Wesley Oliver, at Wahpeton. To this union three fine children were born, all boys. Leo Bower is now 14, Earl Wesley, 10, and Robert Lee, 7.
Mrs. Oliver had been ill since she was about sixteen years of age when her first heart attack took place. During her illness she had always been given the very best medical attention and had consulted many specialists.
A few years after her marriage her condition became worse and has continued until she calmly passed away without pain in a peaceful manner. During the illness she was confined to her bed for a period of two and a half years. Early last summer her condition was improved and for the first time in many months she was able to visit her neighbors and enjoy an occasional automobile ride. Even though she had been seriously and painfully ill for so many months, she never complained. Hers was a disposition that was to be admired. She was always reconciled to her fate. Her aim in life was to live long enough to raise her boys.
In speaking of the passing of his wife Mr. Oliver said this morning: “Hers was one of the most devoted lives I have ever known. In spite of her years of suffering she was always happy. Her smiling disposition and character made it beautiful to have her with us.”
Besides her husband and sons, Mrs. Oliver is survived by three brothers, Jacob Jacobson of Sisseton, S.D.; Christ Jobson of Veblin, S.D.; and Ole H. Jacobson of Rutland; also several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon. Services from the home will be held at two o’clock and, at the Methodist Episcopal church of which she was a member, at a quarter past two o’clock. Rev. A. E. Coombs will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Stalsbraaten of Fergus Falls, a classmate. Interment will be made in the Oliver family lot in Fairview Cemetery.
