Magnus Olson, Pioneer Dies Thursday Morning

Magnus Olson, one of Richland county’s earliest pioneer residents, passed away at 5:30 this (Thursday) morning at his home here after illness lasting for about a year. Death was caused by the effects of old age. Funeral services will probably be conducted on Saturday afternoon from Bethel Lutheran church here with Reverent P. A. Gisvold officiating. Mr. Olson was devout Christian and supporter of his church. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery beside Mrs. Olson.

Born in Alten, Norway, Dec. 26, 1849m he was the second of family of six children. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Engbright Olson came to Richland county to settle in 1878 in Dwight township. Magnus Olson first came to Houghton county, Mich., in 1867, where he lived with his parents. It was here later that he was employed as he first brakeman on an ore train taking shipments out of the famous Calumet mines. He was also employed for a brief time as a miner after his return from Macon county, Missouri, where he moved with his parents and had remained for about two years.

On February 13, 1871, Magnus Olson was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Hogensen in Macon county, Missouri and lived with her until four years ago when Mrs. Olson passed away. In March, 1881, the couple settled on a farm in Dwight township and made their home there until they moved to Wahpeton to iv several years ago. The farm was improved and guilt up to one of the finest farms in Richland county and it was on the home farm that Magnus Olson’s heat always remained. While his interest in farming was the greatest, Mr. Olson always found time for public affairs and he was in constant touch with the affairs of his county, state and nation. A beloved neighbor and friend, Magnus Olson endeared himself to everyone who knew him.

During his residence here, Mr. Olson was one of the early bridge builders of the county, constructing several wooden bridges in the day when wooden bridges were about all the structures over the rivers and creeks of the county. Surviving are three children; P.M. Olson of Battle View, N.D., Andrew M. Olson of Dwight township and Mae M. Olson of Wahpeton. Olaus Olson, a brother lives in Wahpeton. A daughter, Mrs. John Mathieson, passed away a year ago.
