Mrs. Magnus Olson Dies Here at 9:45 Tuesday Evening

Funeral Services for Pioneer Mother To Be Conducted Friday Afternoon

Was Married for Nearly 62 Years

Born in Norway February 19, 1851, Married February 13, 1871, And Came to County in 1881

Sleeping peacefully away at 9:45 Tuesday evening, Mrs. Magnus Olson, a resident of this county since 1881, ended what would have been 62 years of married life. She was married February 13, 1871, to Magnus Olson in Macon county, Missouri, and came to Dwight vicinity shortly afterward. To her came the honorable title of “Pioneer Mother” and the cruel days of her early life were so tempered by the ease of her last years as to bring to her the fullest existence that can come to anyone. Funeral services are to be conducted Friday at 1:30 from the home and at 2 o’clock from the Bethel Lutheran church here of which she has been a member for many years. Rev. J. C. Wisnaes, the family pastor, will officiate at the last rites and will be assisted by Rev. H. O Helseth of Fergus Falls, an old time friend of the Olson family. The 1:30 p.m. service will be in Norwegian. The pallbearers will be E. A. Severeid, George J Fisher, Oscar J. Olson, John R. Johnson, George Myhra and Andrew Simonson. Internment will be in the family lot at Fairview cemetery. Friday morning the remains will be taken to the home on North Fourth Street.

Mrs. Bertha Hogenson was born in Norway February 19, 1851 and came to America when a young girl with her parents. The family settled in Missouri. The Fate that was to unite Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Olson in their long live and happy union brought Magnus Olson from Norway, where he was raised to young manhood by his parents, Engbright and Mary Olson, to Houghton, Michigan and then to Macon county, Missouri.

Here he resided with his parents and became acquainted with his future bride, Bertha Hogensen. The happy young couple came to Dakota territory in 1881 and settled on section four, Dwight township. To this union were born seven children, Mrs. John Mathieson, (Lena), Mrs. Peter M. of Battle View, North Dakota, Andrew M. of Dwight, and Mae M., Wahpeton. Three children, John M. Sophia M. and Ole M. preceded their mother in death. Five grandchildren and a brother John Hogensen of Ethel, Macon county, Mo., also are survivors.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Olson have been life-long members of the Norwegian Lutheran church. At Dwight they were active in building up that congregation and church and they were equally active in Wahpeton. A short while ago, Mrs. Olson was taken ill, and much concern was felt about her health. But she recovered her strength and on Sunday, was able to attend church services. Her husband, the children and her pastor were with her when she passed to her Maker.

For about fourteen years, Mr. and Mrs. Olson lived in their beautiful home on North Fourth Street in Wahpeton. At the time of their arrival in Wahpeton, the railroad ended in Breckenridge and an old time ferry was used to cross the river. The village of Wahpeton did not have a courthouse and a little row of rambling wooden buildings marked Dakota Avenue. In spite of their advanced years, the couple derived much pleasure from life until Mrs. Olson passed away.
