Obituary
CHRIS OLSON, PIONEER FARMER PASSED AWAY After 40 Years Residence in County Old Settler Dies at Home in Wahpeton Chris Olson, 68, a resident of Richland county for more than 40 years, died shortly after six o’clock Saturday morning at his home North Third street. His death came to him as a blessed relief from suffering which followed a stroke of apoplexy early in the summer.
Chris Olson’s wife survives him with their children: George Olson, of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; Oscar Olson, register of deeds of Richland county; Mrs. George Johnson, of Galchutt; Miss Clara Olson, employee of the Boston Store; Miss Cora Olson, at home; Mrs. W. H. Shultz, of Baker, Mont.; Clarence Olson, employee of Vertin’s Furniture company. All were
present at funeral services.
Scores of friends and neighbors who have known Chris Olson and enjoyed his friendship during his residence in Richland county attended the funeral services which were held Tuesday afternoon by Rev. W. B. Dahl at the Norwegian Lutheran church.
Old friends and neighbors – Peter Magnussen, L. L. Brusletten and Magnus Olson, of Wahpeton; Erick Peterson, Ole Flaa, Evan Larson, of Galchutt – were pallbearers. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
Chris Olson was born in Denmark. Left an orphan by the death of his parents he came alone to America when he was eighteen years old.
Going to Faribault, Minn., through industry, perseverance, and pluck he worked his way to a prominent place in lumber and grain business. From Faribault he came to Wahpeton and eventually settled on a farm near Galchutt. Later he moved to the village of Galchutt where he lived with his family for more than 20 years.
To join the children who had come here to live Chris Olson and his wife moved to Wahpeton four years ago. They lived on Eighth street for several months until they purchased the Third street home. General regret and sorrow was felt with the death of this pioneer who did much in promoting the growth and prosperity of the county where he lived for so many years.
