Obituary
Pioneer Mother, Mrs. Lena Olson Dies at Age of 92
Service Held for Resident of County Since October 1883
Services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at two for Mrs. Lena Olson, 92, who passed away Tuesday morning about five o’clock. Rev. P. A. Gisvold read the funeral service at Bethel Lutheran church and interment was in Fairview cemetery in the family plot. She was laid to rest beside her husband, Chris, who preceded her in death several years ago. Vertin Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Lena Erie was born January 5, 1855 at Borgen, Norway, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Erie. When she was ten, her parents brought her to Adams, Minn., where they established their home.
On October 22, 1883, at Austin, Minn., she married Chris Olson, and the happy couple came to North Dakota to make their home. In Wahpeton, Mr. Olson was a grain buyer. Later the family moved to Dwight where they managed the elevator and then to Galchutt. It was 34 years that they spent in these two communities.
In 1917, the family came to Wahpeton again purchasing the family home on North Third Street, and since the death of her husband, Mrs. Olson and her daughters have made their home there. She has kept house and up until the very last was actively engaged in making her home a pleasant, comfortable place for her family.
To Mr. and Mrs. Olson seven children were born: George Soren preceded his mother in death in 1928, Ella (Mrs. George Johnson) died in 1934. Oscar died in 1943 at the time he was active head of the National Bank here. Clara and Cora Olson own and manager Olson Sisters store in Wahpeton; Ethel (Mrs. Walter Shultz) lived at Riverton, Wyo., and Clarence is the proprietor of a furniture store at Ada, Minn; A brother, Henry Erie, lives at LeRoy, Minnesota.
There are seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Olson was always active in her church and her home. She took little part in outside activities except as they concerned her church. At Galchutt and Dwight, she was active in the ladies aids, but of late years, she attended services and confined her other efforts to making a home for her family.
Mrs. Olson was honored several years ago by being elected an honorary charter member of the Bethel Lutheran aid of which she had been an active contributor for many years.
Pallbearers were Hans Syvertsen, Galchutt, Alvin Hans, J. J. Johnson, Art Lee, John Halvorson and John Ness of Wahpeton.
