WESLEY PATTERSON’S LONG SPAN OF LIFE IS ENDED NEAR – CENTENARIAN PASSED AWAY AT HOME HERE MORNING OF EASTER SUNDAY CAME HERE IN EIGHTIES; AIDED IN FOUNDING BANK Funeral Services to be Held Tomorrow Afternoon by Rev. Edwin A. Folley at Foss M. E. Church
Wesley Patterson is dead at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 18 days. On Easter Sunday, shortly before 11 a. m., he passed away at his home on Eighth street and Michigan avenue where he had lived since coming to Wahpeton more than 30 years ago. The direct cause of Mr. Patterson’s death was pneumonia, which had developed from a cold he contracted a month ago. Funeral service will be read for the aged man at Foss M. E. church at 1:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. Edwin A. Folley will officiate. Pallbearers will be old friends of the family.
Mr. Patterson was born on a farm in Ohio of Scotch – English parentage. The date of his birth was December 13, 1828. He was reared to young manhood on this farm and was living there when his marriage to Miss Lucy Shuman took place. Following the marriage, he went with his wife to Clayton county, Iowa, taking up farm residence near Elkader. Here were born the six children: Joseph Patterson, president of The National Bank of this city; Perry Patterson, Wahpeton; Mrs. W. S. Carter, who died about three years ago, after having lived here for several years; Wesley Patterson, Jr., of Cary, Ohio; Dr. Henry Patterson, Elkader, Iowa; Daniel Patterson, Minot.
The family came to this city in the early ‘Eighties, the parents purchasing soon after arrival here the house on Eighth street where the mother died in 1915, at the age of 87, and the father, Sunday, lacking only six years of being a centenarian.
Mr. Patterson was one of the founders of the National Bank of Wahpeton and retained interest in it up to his death. He also had interests in a bank at Hillsboro and the First State Bank of Walcott, of which P. O. Wold, former county treasurer, is cashier. He has served as director of the local bank.
Mr. Patterson enjoyed splendid health throughout his life and was active until he became ill a month ago. Up to that time, despite his age, his physical condition had been showing only slight decline. His activity often caused people to remark. Only a year ago, he proved his strength by chopping down threes about his home. The large garden that he raised each summer was reputed one of the finest in the city.
