Obituary
Lucy Patterson-1915 GRANDMA PATTERSON DEAD DIED FROM GENERAL DECLINE DUE TO OLD AGE-NEARLY 88 YEARS OLD
Saturday morning at four o’clock occurred the death of one of Wahpeton’s oldest and best known citizens-Mrs. Wesley Patterson. Her death was due to the general breakdown of old age, she being eighty-seven years, 10 months and twenty four days old at the time of her death. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Duden conducting the services, and burial was in Fairview cemetery. The pall bearers were E. H. Carter, W. W. Jamison, O. C. Farnsworth, R. M. Lunday, R. H. Cughan and O. A. Leach. Many beautiful floral tributes were to be seen about the casket.
Out of town relatives of the deceased present at the funeral were Aaron Patterson, Carthage, S. D., a brother-in-law, Mrs. Frank Lambert of Minot, Mrs. Dr. McLaughlin of New Rockford and Lou Bleeker of Lisbon, nieces and nephews of Mrs. Patterson, and Mrs. W. L. Carter of Tillman, Fla., and Mrs. W. H. Patterson of Elkader, Ia., her daughter and daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Patterson was born in Pennsylvania in 1827, and when three years old her parents took her with them to Carey, Ohio, where she lived until the time of her marriage sixty-five years ago. After their wedding Mr. and Mrs. Patterson joined the throng of immigrants traveling west, and journeyed in a camper’s wagon drawn with a mule team to their frontier home at Elkader, Ia. Here they lived and reared their six children, and moved to Wahpeton in 1892, twenty-three years ago, where they have resided ever since.
Mrs. Patterson is survived by her six sons and daughters, fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. The children are Dr. W. H. Patterson, Elkader, Ia., Wesley Patterson, Jr., Carey, Ohio, Danile Patterson of New Rockford, Mrs. W. L. Carter, Tillman, Fla., formally of Wahpeton, and Jos. and Perry Patterson of this city.
Mrs. Patterson was a very kind hearted old soul, beloved by all who knew her. She united with the Methodist church in Wahpeton the year following her arrival her, and has been a member ever since. Her life was one of usefulness and kindness, and she will be missed by a host of friends, and leaves a spot vacant in the hearts of her relatives which never can be filled.
