Reburial Rites Friday Afternoon for Pfc. Poppen
Guard of Honor Will Be Men Who Served Overseas
Reburial services for Pfc. Harold Poppen, Wahpeton man who was killed on Guadalcanal in 1942, will be held Friday with rites at Immanuel Lutheran church and interment at Fairview Cemetery.
Men who served overseas in Company I with the local man will act as pallbearers; they are: Arnold Kline, Clarence Achter, Woodrow Keeble, Ira Keeney, Frank Flatten and Roy Engen. On the firing squad will be Charles Dahlgren, Matt Braun, Glen Busko, Dick Cameron, Robert Bartholomay and Bruce Fischer. Colorbearers will be Orphie Kaldor and Dwayne Holly, Color Guards: Eldon Thiel and Jack Schlener, Buglers: Charles Flaa, Gene Swanson.
The body will arrive Thursday afternoon on the Oriental Limited and will be escorted to Schmitt & Olson’s chapel by a guard of honor from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. At the hour of service the body will be taken to the church, the VFW attending in a group.
Harold Poppen was born at Barrett, Minn., February 23, 1922 and came to North Dakota as a lad a year old. He came to Wahpeton as a school age boy and attended public school here. Before entering Company I he was employed for a year at the Courtland Miller farm near Tyler.
With Company I he went to Camp Claiborne, La., then to Idaho and the west coast on guard duty before going overseas. He was killed in one of the early engagements of the war dying Nov 23, 1942 on Guadalcanal at the age of 19.
He had received the Purple Heart and a Good Conduct medal.
He leaves his mother of this city, his father who resides in Minot, one sister, Mrs. William Anjal of this city and one brother, Donald, who is stationed at Adak, Alaska, with the Seabees.

Reburial Service Will Be Conducted Friday Afternoon
The body of Pfc. Harold Poppen, former member of Company I of Wahpeton, arrived here on the Oriental Limited Thursday afternoon. Pfc. Poppen died Nov. 23, 1942, on Guadalcanal at the age of 19.
Reburial services will be conducted Friday afternoon with rites at the Immanuel Lutheran church and interment at Fairview cemetery. A memorial service will be broadcast from 2 to 2:15 p.m., Friday over station KBMW, with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars participating.
The train bearing the body was met by an honor guard of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and escorted to the Schmitt & Olson Chapel. Members of the VFW post will attend the services in a group.
