Obituary
Mrs. J. E. Powrie, 89, Pioneer Resident, Dies
Mrs. John E. (Lucy) Powrie, 89, pioneer Wahpeton resident, died Saturday morning at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Vertin’s Wahpeton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Frank Hirons officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be this afternoon and evening (Monday) and Tuesday morning at Vertin’s Wahpeton.
Mrs. Powrie was born Aug. 20, 1876 at Muscada, Wis. daughter of Alois and Anna Leshovsky. She the eldest of 13 children came to Wahpeton at the age of five in 1881 by covered wagon. Her father came a year ahead of the family and homesteaded in Summit Township.
She married John E. Powrie Dec 25, 1895 at her family’s home in Summit Township and following the marriage, they moved to Wahpeton where Mr. Powrie was a cabinet maker. He later served as chief of police and police magistrate. Mr. Powrie died March 18, 1957 at the age of 90.
A member of the United Church of Christ, she was active in Plymouth Circle and was named the first Deaconess Emeritus of the church. She also was a member of the Ho ‘n’ Gro Garden Cub in Wahpeton.
Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Maris (Beatrice) Beeson of St. Paul, and Mrs. William P. (Cecile) Schoeneck of Wahpeton; three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Emma) Auman of Aberdeen S. Dak., Mrs. John (Grace)Dill and Mrs. P. E. (Della) Healy, both Minneapolis; two brothers, Chester Leshovsky of Minneapolis and Arthur of rural Wahpeton; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
Organist will be Mrs. F. D. Brown with a mixed quartette from the church. Honorary pallbearers will be R. J. Hughes, Alvin Hans, Dr. C. V. Bateman, Irvin Kent, Landon Petersen, Glenn Hoppert, Ray Moss, Calmer Carlson and Warren Schuett.
