Obituary

Light plane mishap claims area farmer

Fredrick D. Pausch, 27, a rural Waheton farmer was killed in a plane crash Monday morning, nine and one-half miles southwest of Madison, S.D. Pausch left Wahpeton at 8 a.m. Monday and was enroute to Kansas to join his parents and brother who were operating a custom combining crew. He was alone in the plane.

Lake County Sheriff Thomas Bakke said in a taped, telephone interview with KBMW news the weather was very poor with low cloud ceilings. The sheriff also characterized what witness Dale Sorenson saw before the mishap occurred. Sorenson was herding cattle, heard a plane, saw it come over the pasture and attempt to land. The next thing Sorenson heard was the plane's engine revving up.

Bakke, a pilot himself, theorized that Pausch attempted to land in the pasture because of the weather. He made his approach, set his landing gear down and just when he was ready to touch down he saw a fence. The sheriff conjectured that this time Pausch gunned his engine trying to lift the plane over the fence. It is believed the plane stalled out, hit the ground, smashed into the fence and disintegrated.

The sheriff said there was plane wreckage scattered for almost a quarter mile from the point of impact.

Pausch was killed instantly.

The funeral service will be at St. John's Catholic Church at a time to be announced. Vertin's of Wahpeton is in charge of arrangements.

Fredrick D. Pausch was born October 17, 1949 to Donald and Margaret Pausch in Breckenridge. He attended Wahpeton schools and graduated from both Wahpeton High School and the State School of Science. On June 25, 1971 he married Karen Bjore in Wahpeton.

He farmed in Summit Township and was in the custom combining business with his father and brother. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Wahpeton Elks and Eagles Clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; two daughters, Janel and Kimberly; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pausch, a brother, Merlyn, Wahpeton; a sister, Mrs. Greg (Marlene) Elif, Fargo, a grandmother, Mrs. Henry Theresa, Pausch, Mooreton.
