Albert Schrieber Passes Away at Richland Farm

Pioneer Resident of Wahpeton, Former Fireman and Jeweler In City

Just as the dawn was breaking July 4th morning, Albert Schrieber, pioneer resident of the city of Wahpeton passed away at the county farm following a period of illness that had continued for many weeks. A cerebral hemorrhage suffered some time ago, followed by complications, is believed to have been the direct cause of his death.

Little is known here of Mr. Schrieber’s early history only that he was born in the year 1857 in Berlin, Germany, and the only known relative, a brother still resides thee. Funeral services will be held Friday under the auspices of the Fligelman Fire Department and the charter members of the Germania Hose Co., of which he was a member. The time of services and burial will be decided at a meeting of the fire department and remaining members of the Germania Hose Co., tonight.

Mr. Schrieber engaged in the jewelry business in Wahpeton for many years and had various locations on Dakota Avenue. After having been in business here for some time, he was committed to Jamestown where he remained for a year where he received treatments at the state hospital and following returned to Wahpeton where he resumed his profession.

During his residence in Wahpeton in the early days, he was a member of the Germania Hose Co., and was active in the work of that organization which was organized in 1886 and was one of the leading characters of that company. With Anton Gilles he was one of the fire company teams who attended fire company tournaments held at Fargo and Grafton, with the first tournament held in Casselton in 1898.

Fire company contests were very interesting in those days, Mr. Gilles said, and Schrieber played an important part in winning contests for the local team. He was a good citizen and no doubt one of the best jewelers in the northwest an old time Wahpeton resident said today.

He will be buried with firemen’s honors. Charter members of the Germania Hose Co., will be pallbearers.
