C. W. Schultz, Former Mayor, Dies Sunday
Services for Veteran Merchant Will Be Conducted Tuesday
Charles W. Schultz, former mayor of Wahpeton, died Sunday morning at St. Mary hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Congregational church with Rev. J. Howard Rees officiating. Services at the church will be 2:00 p.m. and at Schmitt & Olson chapel at 1:40. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
C. W. Schultz was born October 14, 1879, at Newell, IA., and lived in Iowa until 1910 when he came to Wahpeton to go into the hardware business with his father, the late O. H. Schultz, and his brother, Walter, now of Riverton, Wyo. In 1915 he bought the entire business which was located in its own building at 319 Dakota avenue. He sold out in 1932 and since that time has been engaged in carpenter work.
He was married August 12, 1914, to Ida L. Mehlhop at Storm Lake Ia. His wife survives him as does his son, Arnold L., of Springfield Minn., and three granddaughters.
He is also survived by his brother, Walter previously mentioned, and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Rawson of Carlsrud, Calif., and Mrs. Clara Fernybough of San Diego, two half-brothers, Victor Schultz, of San Diego, Calif., and Otto Schultz of Minneapolis and his step-mother, Mrs. Martha Schultz of San Diego.
Charles Schultz served on the Wahpeton city council almost from the time he came to Wahpeton, was president of the council for many years and appointed to succeed the late Henry Bergman. He served out Bergman’s unexpired term and was re-elected two more terms before he decided not to file. Several city improvements were made during his tenure in office, among them being the paving and the building of the Kidder station of the Ottertail Power plant, the city officials being actively engaged in urging the company to locate in Wahpeton with the big plant.
C. W. Schultz was a member of the Congregational church and of the Odd Fellow lodge.
Pallbearers will be: H.B. Paul, Stanley Beach, H.B. Wallis, M. C. Voves, L.E. Lester, C.M. Comstock.
