Andrew Simonson Dies Suddenly on Monday Morning

Pioneer Richland County Man Passes Away at Home on North Seventh Street

Andrew S. Simonson, North Seventh street, passed away very suddenly at his home at six o’clock this Monday morning. His death is attributed to a heart condition and complications due to advanced years. Funeral arrangements are pending arrival of members of the family.

Andrew Samson Simonson was born February 14th 1857 in Sonfjord, Norway. In the year of 1880, he emigrated to the United States and for some time was employed at the Ole Tew farm near Wahpeton. Two years later he returned to the land of his birth and in 1883, he brought his bride back with him to the states. They settled on a farm on the Wild Rice and a few years later bought the farm three miles west of the city known as the Simonson farm. Twenty five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Simonson retired and moved to Wahpeton. They built the house on North Seventh street which has been occupied by the Simonson family through the years. Mrs. Simonson passed away eight years ago.

Mr. Simonson was one of the North Dakota’s hardiest pioneers. Coming to the states fifty seven years ago he saw the building of this fine community into its present advancement. He was a kindly neighbor and no tribute can be made to Mr. Simonson hen to say he lived a sincere Christian life.

Throughout his entire lifetime Mr. Simonson was a member of the Lutheran church at Dwight of which he was a member and of the Bethel Lutheran church of which he later became a member.

The news of his death comes as a shock to his closest friends and relatives. Mr. Simonson had not been confined to his bed entirely although he had been ill since last October. Each day he was up and about for short intervals and on Sunday he appeared to be feeling much better. He was up most of the day and ate his meals regularly. He retired at the usual hour and apparently slept well until about five thirty. His daughter, Miss Jennie Simonson who has been with him, heard him utter a moan. She went to his bedside but nothing seemed amiss. Few minutes later she again went to his bedside and it was then that she noticed that he just passed away.

Four children are left to survive. Miss Jennie Simonson at home, Sam Simonson who lives on the home place near this city. Mrs. Warren (Alma) odds of Lisbon and Mrs. Clarence (Bertha) Finch of Laurel, Mont., and will not be able to come home for the last rites on account of the illness. A sister Mrs. Langedahl, Canada also survives.
