August Sjoquist, Dwight Merchant Dies on Monday
Funeral Services Held Thursday For Postmaster of That Village for Past 27 years
Came to County from Sweden in 1891
Wife, Four Children, Two Sisters and Two Brothers Survive from Family August Sjoquist, pioneer resident and merchant in the Dwight community passed way very sudden Monday afternoon at his home following a heart attack. Funeral services were held from the home at two o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
The news of the death of Mr. Sjoquist came as a shock to the entire community where he had resided the past forty years. He was stricken while at work in his private garage, death occurring a few minutes later.
August Sjoquist was born at Davidstrom, Allen parish Kalmarford, Sweden, May 9, 1872, and came to the United States in 1891 and live on a homestead eight miles north of Mooreton until in the year of 1908. In 1909, he engaged in the general store business in Dwight until 1931 when his store building and stock were destroyed by fire.
In 1906, Mr. Sjoquist was named postmaster in Dwight in which capacity he served until his death. On various occasions he had held village offices and has been a member of the Dwight School Board. Mr. Sjoquist was very well known over a wide area and in his death the entire community has lost a citizen held in high esteem. On the date of May 30, 1902 August Sjoquist and Miss Jean Carlson were united in marriage. Four children were born to this union as follows: Carleton, who preceded his father in death in 1916; Evelyn, who is employed at the Wahpeton Indian School, Grayce teaching at Turnbridge, N.D. and Joyce, student at the State School of Science.
Also surviving are his wife, two sisters, Miss Almida Sjoquist of Los Angeles, Mrs. Andrew Linden of Fargo, John of Willmar and Albin of Seattle, Wash. Pallbearers were Andrew Olson, Louis Larson, Arthur Osmundson, Ruel Wije, Edwin Larson and Frank Nunns.
