Peter Sletten, Retired Businessman Suffers Heart Attack at Gravel Pit

Services for Pioneer Wahpeton Man Friday

Peter Sletten, 70 year old retired Wahpeton business man died at the wheel of his truck of an acute heart attack Tuesday morning as he was leaving the Hankinson gravel pit south of Lake Elsie.

Leaving home at 6:15 a.m., he was in excellent spirits and he made the trip to Hankinson without mishap, filled his truck at the conveyor and left the pit. Men at the machine saw the truck straighten out as he started downhill and came to a stop at an embankment. They ran to his aid and found that he had suffered a heart attack; he died a few minutes later.

Peter C. Sletten was born on the homestead of his father, the late Ole Sletten on the banks of the Wild Rice river May 4, 1879. He spent his boyhood there and attended the Red River University and seminary at Red Wing.

In 1915 he married Malinda Cherry and they became the parents of one son, Milton who with his mother survives. They made their home on the Sletten homestead for several years and Mr. Sletten managed the elevator at the Stevenson siding. He was township clerk in Center township several years. Later he went on the road with the Gas Traction Company of Minneapolis. He returned to North Dakota and again took up farming and went into commercial threshing. The family moved to Wahpeton in 1919 and bought the present home at 115 11th St. N. Several years ago Mr. Sletten operated a garage here. In recent years he had been in the trucking business.

His most recent project was the building of the business structure on 11th Street which houses the Sletten Motor Company, operated by his son.

In addition to his wife and son, he leaves two brothers Simon Sletten of Milwaukee, Wis., and C. O. Sletten of this city; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Langedahl, of Ongre, Sask. Mrs. J. P. Wall, of Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Clara Blegen, of Minneapolis. There are two grandchildren David and Barbara Jo Sletten.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 from the family home and at two o’clock from Bethel Lutheran church, with Rev. P.A. Gisvold officiating. Pallbearers will be C. E. Moore, Alvin Hans, J. Meyer Johnson, Peter Odness, Clifford Ruddy and Howard Paul. Honorary pallbearers will be James Ruud, John Halvorson, George Hedner, Walter Crawford, Nels Engen and Elmer Bullock.
