Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from Schmitt & Olson’s chapel this city for Edward Smith World War Veteran and son of Mrs. A.A. Smith, who lives just north of the city. The military Rites will be in charge of the American Legion and pallbearers will be from that organization. Reverend Ha will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Edward Smith died Sunday morning at 12:45 o’clock at St. Francis hospital, Breckenridge. Tuberculosis, contracted while he was in the service, caused his death. He was born August 21, 1895, at Western, Minn., coming to Wahpeton in 1915 with his parents. He attended school at Erhart, Minn., but was engaged in farming with his parents here before the war.
In 1917 he enlisted in the army serving with Company I, 164th Infantry. He contracted the malady which caused his death at Camp Custer, Mich., and was confined to a hospital there for six weeks. For some time, he was in better health and returned home in 1918, honorably discharged and remained with his parents. He was, however, in ill health for some time and was sent to Rapid City, So. Dak., for treatment, but was returned home in better health about a year ago. The first part of January he was again taken ill and was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he died.
Edward Smith was well-known here, before his illness being one of the progressive young men of the community. His father, A.A. Smith, died four years ago. He is survived by six brothers, besides his mother. They are Samuel of Fargo; William of this city; Ernest, Archie and Harry, who live on the home place and Earl of this city.
