J.E. Smith Dies Here Wednesday
Prominent Citizen and Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works Salesman Passes Away
J. E. Smith, prominent and well known Wahpeton citizen, passed away Wednesday night after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. He was connected with the Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works as a salesman, being one of the first employed by that company in Wahpeton. He has been a resident of the city since 1909 and is the owners of considerable property here. He lived at DeLamere before coming here.
John Elias Smith was born June 17, 1874, near Lake Mills, Iowa, and grew to manhood there. He attended school in Iowa and Married Martha E. Tisdel there February 26, 1898. They came to DeLamere in 1904, where Mr. Smith engaged in the general mercantile business with this father-in-law, Lewis Tisdel.
In 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Wahpeton where Mr. Smith went to work for a lightning rod company, traveling out of here as a salesman. For the past 16 years, he has been connected with the Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works as a salesman and is widely known over the entire state. He was active in the Bethel Lutheran church here and took an active interest in community affairs.
He is survived by his wife and (children) Mrs. C. W. Massey (Ruth Janet) of Fergus Falls; Lewis, Wahpeton and Kenneth, Excelsior, Minn. A daughter, Lulu, passed away November 8, 1918. A grandson, Kenneth Massey, and his brothers, Henry and Samuel, of Edmonton, Alberta; George of Moscow, Idaho and sister, Mrs. S. S. Anderson of Moscow, Idaho, also survive him.
