Obituary

Mrs. Smith, 83, Longtime Local Resident, Passes

Mrs. John E. (Martha) Smith, 63, resident of Wahpeton since 1918, died Monday evening in St Francis hospital where she had been a patient for a month.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Bethel Lutheran church here with Rev P. Gisvold officiating and Schmitt & Polton Funeral home in charge. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Schmitt & Poulton Funeral Home Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning.

Pallbearers will be Arthur Lee, Odin Wold, Vernon Johnson, John Bakken, Mel Sherva and Alvin Hans.

Martha Teidel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Teidel, was born Aug. 18, 1975, at Lake Mills, Iowa, where she attended schools and grew to womanhood. She married Mr. Smith there in February 1898.

Shortly after their marriage they came to North Dakota to settle at Delamere, where he operated a general merchandise and hardware store. In 1910, they came to Wahpeton. Mr. Smith, was a salesman for Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works, until his death Nov. 16, 1932. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were charter members of what is now Bethel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sons, Lewis of Oakland Calif., and Kenneth of Las Banos, Calif., a daughter Mrs Ruth Massey of Wahpeton, 2 brothers, Oscar of Seattle, Wash, and Thomas of Wyndmere, a grandchild and five great-grandchildren.
