Obituary
Alfred C. Smith
Services for Alfred C. Smith, 89, Wahpeton, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel with Kenneth Olson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton. Mr. Smith died Wednesday at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center.
Casket bearers are Roger Slotten, Paul Lackmann, Andrew Slotten, Elmer Affield, Elmer Walter and Dwight Anderson.
Visitation is this afternoon and evening at Vertin's and Friday until the time of services.
Alfred C. Smith was born May 10, 1889 at Galana, Ill., to George and Carrie Smith. He moved with his parents to Groton, S.D., and married Sarah Olson in Aberdeen, S.D. in 1912. He farmed for 10 years at Milnor, N.D. He later moved to Wahpeton and worked for the Great Northern Railroad at the Breckenridge roundhouse as a stationary engineer for 36 years. His first wife died in 1933.
He married Laura McKenzie on August 11, 1947. The couple lived in Wahpeton. She died in 1970. He resided at the Leach Home for several years before moving to the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center.
He was a member of the Christian Non-denominational Church and also a member of International Order of Fireman and Oilers.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Lilas) Neumaier, Iowa City, Iowa, Mrs. W.E. (Jeanne) Hanson, Castle Rock, Wash., Mrs. Patricia Zimmerman, North Brook, Ill., 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a brother, Leo, Watertown, S.D.
He was preceded in death by a son, Clayton, and two sisters.
