Obituary

Funeral Monday for Julius Smith, Long of County Resident

Funeral services were Monday afternoon in the Wahpeton Congregational church for Julius F. Smith, 83, of Wahpeton. Mr. Smith, a resident of Richland County since 1904, died Thursday in St. Francis hospital where he had been a patient five weeks.

Rev. Frank Hirons officiated at the service and interment was in Fairview Cemetery. Schmitt-Poulton Funeral Home of Wahpeton had charge.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, Robert, Elroy, Lester, Lyle, Louis and Marlyn Smith. Honorary bearers were Ambrose Traeger, Adolph Kub, Henry Osen, Elmer Ward, Nick and Jake Meyer.

Mr. Smith was born June 9, 1876 in Ephrim, Wis., where he attended schools. When he was a young man he came to Henricks, Minn., where he married Minnie Berndt April 4, 1900. They farmed at Henricks for two years before they came to Richland County.

They lived first on a farm north of Great Bend but in 1907 moved to Mooreton Township, where he resided until retiring from farming in 1939 when they moved to Wahpeton.

Surviving are: his wife of Wahpeton; four sons, Ferd, Irvin and Tony, all of Wahpeton and Elmer of Doran; 17 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers, five sisters and a son, Arnold.
