Arnold Smith Is Killed Thursday By Avalanche
Funeral Services for Son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Smith Will be Held Tuesday Death came to Arnold William Smith, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Smith, of Mooreton township, in an accident which occurred in the Cascade Mountains near Scenic, Wash., last Thursday.
Arnold was killed when rocks loosened by dynamite crashed down the mountain side in a manmade avalanche, according to the story received by his parents. He was working with a road construction crew when he met with the accident which cost him his life.
Funeral services will be held at one o’clock Tuesday afternoon from his father’s home west of Dwight and at two o’clock from the Congregational Church in Wahpeton. Last rites will be conducted by Rev. Ross B. Hartman and interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Arnold William Smith, the third son of Julius and Minnie Smith, was born March 30, 1912 on the home farm in Mooreton township. He worked as a mechanic in Brookpark, Minn., for two years, and for the last three years had been working in the state of Washington. His last work was with a road construction gang near Scenic, Wash., and it was while with them that he met with the tragic accident last week.
Near relatives who survive him are his parents, his four brothers, Ferdinand, Anthony, Elmer and Irvin and his grandfather, Julius Berndt of White, S. D.

Arnold W. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Smith, of Mooreton township, was killed instantly Thursday, Aug 3rd, while fighting fire in the Cascade mountains. He had been working for Elliott snd Co. for the past three months. They were building a highway over Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains. A heavy stand of virgin timber covers the ground on which they were working. In clearing the forest for the highway s fire broke out in the standing timber, and every man in camp was called upon to fight it, working to the point of exhaustion, their places then taken by fresh men. Altogether there were approximately two hundred snd fifty men fighting fire. Last Thursday at about two-thirty in the afternoon, Arnold, doing the work of three men, was trapped in a slide of boulders, caused by the fire burning out old logs underneath them. He was killed instantly.
