**Fred Smith Dies in Dutton. Mont., Sunday October 3
Former President of Science School Succumbs Following Long Illness**
Fred E. Smith passed away at his home in Dutton, Mont., Sunday morning, Oct 3rd, at the age of 76 years. His wife and 15 year old son were at his bedside when the end came. Mr Smith had been in failing health for twelve years. He is survived by his widow and one son Charles, and three stepchildren. Donald Rice of Cutbank, Mor., Mrs F W Hollenstein of Chicago and Mrs. Theodore Kurtz of Clark, S. D.
Mr. Smith's first wife died in 1918 and in 1920 he was married to Mrs. Hattie T Rice, of Grand Forks, but formerly of Wahpeton.
Fred Everett Smith was born at Tunbridge, Vt. in 1861 He received his B A degree at Dartmouth College in 1889 and his L. L. D., degree at Albany Law School in 1891, practiced law three years, held successively, school superintendencies at Haylenville, Mass, Windsor Conn., Fargo and Wahpeton, and in 1910 was elected to the president's chair at the State School of Science, which position he held for nine years. In 1919 he was appointed high school supervisor for the state of South Dakota, holding this position for six years and a few years later held the position of deputy state superintendent of public instruction. Because of failing health he was obliged to resign this position after three years of service. The family left Pierre, S. D., in 1932, moving to Dutton, Mont., where they have since resided.
Former Science School President is Dead
Fred E. Smith, former Wahpeton superintendent of schools and one-time president of the State School of Science here, died at Dutton, Mont., Sunday after an illness of several years. He had been confined to his home by paralysis. He is survived by his wife and one son. Funeral services will be conducted at Dutton Tuesday. Mr. Smith was a members of the Masonic lodge here and was active in community affairs in Wahpeton. He left here about 1917.
