Obituary
Kate T. Smith-1918
MRS. F. E. SMITH DEAD; FUNERAL YESTERDAY RESULT OF LONG ILLNESS FROM TUMORS WIDELY KNOWN IN NORTH DAKOTA Had Been Active in Women’s Club and Lodge Work for Years, and Had Done Much to Advance the Work of Such Organizations. Mrs. Kate Smith, wife of President F. E. Smith of the State School of Science, died at her home in this city Monday evening at seven o’clock, following a long illness. The cause of death was a malignant growth which physicians classified as sarcomatous tumors.
Kate Ticknor, daughter of James G. and Carrie Perkins Ticknor, was born at Lebanon, N. H., October 5, 1864. In 1894 she was united in marriage with Fred E. Smith, and five years later, August 1899, Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to North Dakota, locating in Fargo, where Mr. Smith was principal of the city schools for some five or six years. In 1905 the Smiths moved to Wahpeton, Mr. Smith having accepted the position of superintendent of the Wahpeton schools, which position he held until his election as president of the Science School.
Since residing in Wahpeton Mrs. Smith has become known throughout the community, where she has been an active worker in many lines of public service, but especially though the Congregational Ladies Aid, of which she was a past president; the Woman’s Literary club, in which she had also held the office of president; the Rebekah lodge, in which she was a prominent worker; and the Eastern Star, in which order she held the chair of Worthy Matron at the time of her death. Mrs. Smith’s acquaintances and activities, however, were not confined to the circle of her immediate community, but were state-wide. As an active club worker she was known to members of women’s clubs all over the state and as Vice President of the North Dakota Rebekah Assembly she was directly in line to receive the highest honor that could be conferred upon her by that organization – that of its presiding officer. Mrs. Smith was also a past grand of the Fairmount, N. D., Rebekah lodge.
Less than a year ago Mrs. Smith underwent an operation at the local hospital for removal of tumors, and it was believed for many months that her cure was permanent. In fact, it is believed that the fatal attack was of a different nature, and entirely apart from the first one. During her last illness she was remarkably cheerful, and though suffering intensely at times she seemed always glad to see her friends, and always had for them a cheerful greeting and a pleasant smile. She did not realize that her illness was bound to be fatal until just a few days before her death.
Beside her husband, deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. Carrie Ticknor, who has made her home here with her daughter, and an aunt, Mrs. N. B. Perkins of St. Johnsbury, Vt., who arrived in Wahpeton Tuesday of last week. The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 and the Congregational church, Rev. Stillwell delivering the sermon. The high esteem in which the departed one was held was evidenced by the profusion of floral offerings, and the large number of sorrowing friends who attended the service. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery, whither a large number of friends followed the remains to the final resting place.
