Obituary
Edward Spenser-1918
E. W. Spencer Dead; Well Known Editor FOLLOWED TWO YEARS ILLNESS OF BRIGHT’S DISEASE Edited Globe-Gazette & Times Most of His Life Was Spent in Newspaper Work, as Editorial Writer on Ohio Dailies and as Publisher of Western Weeklies.
Edward W. Spencer died at his home in this city last Sunday, August 18, after an illness of some two years from Bright’s disease. His age was sixty-nine years and fourteen days.
Mr. Spencer was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, where he spent his early years. Early in life he came west, and at the age of twenty-one he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, while in Kansas. He has remained a faithful worker in that denomination ever since.
Mr. Spencer has spent most of his life in the newspaper game. While still a young man he returned to Ohio and began work of that sort, and was prominently known as an editorial writer of ability on several Ohio dailies. As
his age advanced he decided to come west again and start in the newspaper business for himself. He established the Prairie Press at Gwinner, Sargent County, this state, and conducted the business successfully for a number of years, at first having the printing done in an out of town shop, later installing a first class plant of his own. On April 1, 1913, he came to Wahpeton and took the editorial chair of the Globe-Gazette, where he remained as associate editor and manager of the newspaper until January 1st, 1914. It was then announced that Mr. Spencer had resigned his position with the Globe-Gazette and had purchased the Wahpeton Times. This paper he conducted for something over a year, but failing health interfered with his work and he was compelled to sell the property. Later he took the management of a paper at Cando, N. D., from which his increasingly poor health compelled him to resign with-in a few months. Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife, who resides in Wahpeton, and by a brother and two sisters in Ohio. They are Rev. Bunyon Spencer, Mrs. Margaret Mears and Mrs. Martha Saffel. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Tuesday afternoon Rev. Hobbs and Rev. Mirick conducting the service. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
