Mrs. Spencer, whose maiden name we do not know, was born in Ohio December 24, 1863, and came to North Dakota with her husband in the early 1900’s. They lived in Oakes and Gwinner for a few years, during which time Mr. Spencer edited a newspaper at Gwinner known as the Gwinner Messenger. From there they came to Wahpeton in about 1915. Mr. Spencer taking a position as editor of the Globe-Gazette, which was at that time published by the Globe Gazette Printing Company. Later he bought the Wahpeton Times which he edited until illness forced him to dispose of the business. After a long illness he passed away in 1918.
Mrs. Spencer then returned to Oakes and for several years took care of the family of Mr. Dufelmierer. The family consisted of three children, Florence, Adelaide and Harold, who Mrs. Spencer helped to raise as though they were her own. Harold, who is now in service, stopped in Wahpeton a few months ago to visit Mrs. Spencer in the hospital.

Hughes and mother, and remained here in the capacity of housekeeper until 1936, after which she spent some time traveling in California and visiting relatives in Ohio. In 1939 she became seriously ill and has been helpless most of the time since. For a while she was cared for at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Johnstone and later was admitted to St. Francis hospital. She passed away very quietly Saturday morning at 1:00 o’clock.
