Funeral Services For Mrs. Swank Set for Friday
Wahpeton Resident More Than 50 Years Dues Tuesday Evening
Funeral services for Mrs. D. D. Swank, for more than 50 years, a resident of Wahpeton and who died late Tuesday evening at her home in this city, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church with Rev. C. H. Meier officiating.
Mrs. Swank was well known to the general public, having assisted her husband during the years in his various business enterprises and more particularly in the grocery business which he conducted for many years.
Rachel Hesli was born Jan. 27, 1875 near Anoka in Hennepin County, Minnesota. She grew to womanhood there and was married March 19, 1894 to Dan Swank the couple saying their vows in Minneapolis
A couple days after their wedding they came to Wahpeton to establish their home and they have resided here since, establishing a summer home some years ago at Crystal Lida beach.
Mrs. Swank was active in the Congregational Ladies Aid; she was a member of the Royal Neighbors of the AUOW and the Degree of Honor. She was a charter member of the local WRC.
An invalid since May 1943, Mrs. Swank had been care for in her home and had been able to spend the summers at the lakes with her family. She became seriously ill Jan. 2 and lapsed into a coma Monday evening.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Ivy Swank and Grace McLaughlin. She is survived by her husband, daughter, Miss Hazel Swank, principal of the Wahpeton Grade School and two grandsons, Charles, of Norman, Okla., and Harry, of Great Lakes, both in the U.S. Navy. Both the latter will be here for the funeral. There are three brothers surviving: John and William Hesli, of Anoka, Martin Heslie, Minneapolis and one sister, Mrs. Henning Darth, also of Minneapolis.
Interment will be in the family lot at Fairview cemetery. The body will lie in state at Vertin’s chapel until the hour of services.
