Obituary
D. D. Swank Funeral Rites Here Tuesday
D. D. Swank, 86 former Wahpeton businessman and public official, died Saturday at his summer home on Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids, Minn.
Funeral services will be here Tuesday at 2 p.m., in the Congregational church with the Rev. Frank Hirons officiating. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers will be C. M. Comstock, D. H.S. Kreidler, John Thompson, Wallace Morden, M. B. Zimmerman and R. C. Rubertus.
The body will lie in state at the Vertin Funeral Home in Wahpeton Monday afternoon and evening.
He was born in Bourbon, Ind., March 1, 1871, coming to Anoka, Minn., with his parents when a young boy and receiving his education there. He came to Wahpeton in 1890 and took employment in the Henry Valker meat market.
He returned to Minnesota to marry Rachel Heslie of Anoka, the couple saying their nuptial vows in Minneapolis March 29, 1894. A couple of days later they came to Wahpeton and his home has been here since.
In 1895 Mr. Swank established a bakery business in Wahpeton but in 1900 he switched to groceries, buying and remodeling the building now owned by Mart Voves. He continued in business there until 1914. Meantime, he had served as city treasurer for three terms starting in 1900. In 1916 he became city assessor and served until 1920. In 1917 he started his 20 years of service as county commissioner, two terms being chairman of the board.
In 1923 he entered partnership with his son-in-law, Harry MacLaughlin and they established Swank and MacLaughlin Grocery. Mr. Swank selling his interest in 1928 to Mr. McLaughlin. Mr. Swank built the building in which it was housed until going out of business a few years ago.
In 1923 Mr. Swank built the Swank building which houses the Rubertus Clothing store and two apartments.
In addition to his business and political activities, Mr. Swank took an active part in such community enterprises as the fire department which he helped to organize, the county fairs held here several years ago, and the draft board on which he served when it was first organized.
Mr. and Mrs. Swank celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in March 1944. Mrs. Sank died in 1945. Two daughters, Ivy in 1919 and Grace MacLaughlin in 1928 also preceded him in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Hazel at home; a two grandsons, Charles D. MacLaughlin of Fargo and Harry H. MacLaughlin, Jr., of Minneapolis and two great-grandchildren.
