Barney Man Killed in Plane Crash
A Barney youth, Gerald Richard Sanden, 32, dies of injuries suffered Thursday afternoon in a light plane crash in a field about eight miles west of Argusville, N.D.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Rev. Conrad Greenquist officiating. Interment was in Garden of Christus, Fairview Memorial Cemetery, Wahpeton.
Sanden, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glennis Sanden of Barney, was flying alone at the time of the accident. He was a student pilot. A senior student at Concordia College in Moorhead, he recently was named as one of North Dakota’s exchanges for the 1967-68 year and was to go to Argentina in September.
Sanden’s plane reportedly left Hector Airport in Fargo shortly after 1 p.m. A witness told Cass County Sheriff’s deputies that he saw the plan in a spin a couple hundred feet in the air and that it crashed straight down. The plane did not burn after the crash occurred about 2 p.m. His body was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free. He apparently was killed instantly.
He was born March 16, 1945 at Breckenridge, residing on his parents farm near Barney. He had been very active in church, community and school activities and capped his nine-year 4-H Club carrier with the Richland Aggies in Danton Township by earning a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.
Sanden was a senior in business administration at Concordia. He was baptized and confirmed at Wyndmere Lutheran Church.
Besides his parents, he leaves two brothers, David a student at NDSU in Fargo and Robert at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bohn of Hankinson and Mrs. Gilbert (Ragna) Sanden, Wyndmere.
Also surviving is a great-grandmother, Mrs. Amanda Bohn of Great Bend.
Serving as pallbearers were David Nordquist, Brian Sanden, Richard Wehlen, Dennis Heitkamp Royce Aslakson and Robert Kjar.
Organist was Mrs. Klinton Braaton with Mrs. Laverne Olson as vocalist. The congregation hymn was “Abide With Me.”
Vertin’s Wahpeton was in charge of arrangements.
