A. Schmeichel Dies Tuesday At Hospital

Funeral services for August Schmeichel, 65, who died Tuesday at St. Francis hospital after a brief illness, will be held Saturday afternoon at three o’clock at Immanuel Lutheran church. Rev. Henry Fry will officiate and Vertin’s Funeral home, Wahpeton, is in charge of arrangements.

August Schmeichel was born at Widendorf, Germany, Jan. 14, 1894. He came to the United States as a young man, living in Chicago two years and then moving to Richland County, where he settled on a farm north of town in Dwight Township. He married Sarah Violet Hammond April 20, 1939, and they became the parents of a son Everett.

Mr. Schmeichel farmed until 1951 when he retired and moved to Wahpeton, where he built a home. His health was good until last fall when he suffered a light stroke. He had another attack Monday and died Tuesday at the hospital.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church and had served as a trustee many years.

He is survived by his wife and one son Everett. Friends may call at Vertin Funeral home Friday afternoon and evening and until 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Garden.

Pallbearers will be Elmer Affield, Dick Deede, Waldemar Fenske, Robert Matt, George Soltis and Walter Wolfgram. Honorary bearers: Jess Babbit, Ted Erickson, Adolph Horkey, L. R. Krengel, Ed Mathisen, and Jos. Nordick.
