Wahpeton Man Found Dead Near River Here Thursday

The Wahpeton fire department was called to the scene Thursday afternoon when the body of a Wahpeton man was found along the bank of the Red River here, partly in the water.

Henry C. Schmidt, 61, died of a heart attack. Dr. C. V. Bateman, Richland County coroner, stated following an autopsy.

Funeral services were held Sunday from Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Rev. Henry Fry officiating. Interment was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Henry C. Schmidt was born in Summit township Aug. 25, 1901, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry F Schmidt

He engaged in farming until 1931 when he moved to Wahpeton where he has since lived. He was married to Lydia Holthusen Oct. 20, 1932.

Mr. Schmidt worked as a carpenter for many years, being employed by Ed Loll and built many homes in Wahpeton.

Survivors include his wife and two brothers, Edward, Fergus Falls and Frank, Lake City, Minn.

Organist was Stanley Strege and vocalist was Mrs. Arnold Pankow. Active pallbearers were Carl Gast, Fred Mahler, William Mahler, Gordon Thimjon, Marvin Thimjon and Orvil Holthusen.

Honorary Pallbearers were Rudolph Radke, Ed Loll, William Tribke, Henry Hauschild, George W. Holthusen, Walter B. Holthusen, George Brosowske and Philip Worner.

Vertin’s-Wahpeton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
