2 Wahpeton women die in weekend traffic mishap

Two Wahpeton residents lost their lives in a two-car traffic mishap one mile west of here on Highway 13 early Saturday afternoon.

Dead are Maxine Torgenrud, 50, and a passenger, Vi Peterson, 59.

Mrs. Torgenrud died en route to St. Francis Hospital; Mrs. Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene according to authorities.

The driver of the second car, Sharon Fleischauer, is reported in good condition at St. Francis suffering from multiple lacerations and fractures. Miss Fleischauer was rescued from the vehicle she was driving by members of the Wahpeton Fire Department Rescue Squad and the Wahpeton Police Department.

The mishap occurred around 1:30 according to Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

The car in which Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Torgenrud were driving was west bound and apparently slid into the east bound lane according to authorities.

The deaths raise the North Dakota state highway fatality toll to 208 as compared with 206 on this date one year ago.

The Associated Press reports two other mishaps accurred over the weekend.

Police have identified a woman killed in a parking lot accident as Mrs. Evelyn Soleim, 53, Jamestown.

Jamestown police said Mrs. Soleim was killed Saturday when her vehicle apparently slipped into gear and a head-on collision on Provincial Trunk Highway 9 near Selkirk, Man., about 20 miles north of Winnipeg.

Lipsey was the lone occupant of his car, authorities said. The driver of the second car was hospitalized.

The funeral for Mrs. Glenn (Vi) Peterson, 59, Wahpeton, will be at 10:30 Thursday in Vertin's Wahpeton Chapel, Rev. Robert Olson officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and evening and up to the time of service Thursday. Mrs. Horace Lehren will be organist with Mrs. Robert Williams singing.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Doll, Ervin Mortenson, Harold Diederich, Art Diederich, Warren Schuett, Monroe Moen and Roy Hausauer.

Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Violet Portney was born Oct. 17, 1914 at Lemmon, S.D. She was graduated from North Dakota State School of Science and was married at Sisseton, S.D., June 21, 1938.

She was office manager of Breckenridge Lumber Company. Mrs. Peterson was a member of the North Dakota Bowlers Association.

She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Lillie Portney, Lemmon; three brothers and two sisters, Roger, Richmond, Calif.; Woodrow, Richardton, N.D.; John, Loomis, Calif.; Mrs. Jack (Inez) Burdick, Sanoma, Calif.; and Mrs. Ben (Marge) Johnson, Escondido, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister.

Funeral rites for Mrs. Maxine Torgenrud, 50, Wahpeton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday from Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Tom G. Akeley officiaiting.

Mrs. Torgenrud was fatally injured in a highway mishap Saturday afternoon near Wahpeton on Highway 81.

Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening only in Vertin Chapel.

Mrs. Torgenrud was born Sept. 10, 1923 to Carl and Ruth Hoffman of Wahpeton. She attended Wahpeton public school and the State School of Science. She was employed as secretary at Wahpeton Senior High.

She was married March 8, 1941 to Lyle Torgenrud who preceded her in death March 6, 1959. Her parents also preceded her.

Survivors include two sons, Terry of Tacoma, Wash., and David of Singapore; one grandson and one sister, Mrs. Clayton (Mona) Anderson, Scottsdale, Arizona. Vertin's Wahpeton______________.
