Obituary

Dr. Thompson Dies Sunday At home Here

Dr. Andrew M. Thompson, well known Wahpeton physician who had practiced medicine here since 1930, died suddenly at his home Sunday. He had been in ill health since November.

Funeral service has been set for 2 p.m., Wednesday from the Bethel Lutheran church here with Rev. P. A. Gisvold officiating. The body will lie in state at Schmitt and Olson Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Al Johnson, O.J. Wold, Arthur Johnson, John Flaa, R. C. Potts and Otis Larson.

Born Oct., 20, 1889 at Loyalton S.D., he spent most of his childhood in St. Ansgar, Iowa. He came with his parents to North Dakota to Havana where they lived on a farm.

After graduation from high School at Havana, he enrolled at St. Olaf College Northfield, Minn. Upon graduating from St. Olaf, he entered the service during World War I as a doctor’s aide, serving for two years.

He returned to this area after receiving his discharge from the service. On July 2, 1919 he was united in marriage to Thea Sathe of Havana.

After their marriage, they moved to Grand Forks where he attended the University of North Dakota studying medicine for two years. He completed his medical studies at Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill.

He served his internship at Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago. Returning to this area, he took up a practice at Havana. Six months later he moved his practice to Abercrombie where he lived until coming to Wahpeton.

Coming to Wahpeton he went into partnership with Dr. C. V. Bateman in what has been known as the Bateman and Thompson clinic. He and Dr. Bateman studied together all through medical school.

A prominent figure in medical circles, he was official physician at the State School of Science here for many years.

Dr. Thompson suffered a heart attack Nov. 23. He was taken to St. Francis hospital where he was a patient for three weeks. Since he has been convalescing at his home here.

Dr. Thompson was a member of the Bethel Lutheran church, a member of the Wahpeton Masonic Lodge and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Surviving besides his wife and a son, Andrew M. of Williston, a sister, Mrs. Ulgo Thurno of Albert Lea, Minn., two brothers, Theodore of San Francisco, Calif., and Elmer Nelson in Colorado. Two grandchildren also survive.
