Funeral Services for Torgenrud Held Tuesday
Division Roadmaster Succumbs to Stroke; Burial in Local Cemetery
P.M. Torgenrud, division roadmaster for the Great Northern, headquartered out of Breckenridge was buried Tuesday from Bethel Lutheran church in Wahpeton. Mr. Torgenrud died Thursday night, following a stroke. He had bid guests at his home good night and gone upstairs. He suffered a stroke and was found slumped in a chair by his wife. A physician was called but he passed away at 5 a.m.
Peander Marcus Torgenrud was born at Spring Grove, Minn., on June 27m 1890, the son of Halvor and Ragnild Torgenrud. He was baptized in infancy at Spring Grove by Rev. S. S. Reque. In 1902 he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Walcott, N.D., by Rev. Olaf Skattebol.
At the tender age of 14, his mother died and after that he provided for himself. That probably was one of the things that made him liked by all. He possessed the spark of kindness that comes only to those who have had to battle life, alone at a tender age. To that class of people comes true understanding of the man who labors and Mr. Torgenrud had that understanding. A self made man, he was a friend to all, a loyal employee and a man worth calling a friend.
On October 23, 1913 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Johnson, at Walcott, N.D. To this union was born a son, Lyle who together with his mother remains to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
Mr. Torgenrud at the time of his death had been in the employ of the Great Northern Railway in the Maintenance department for 22 years. In 1922 his work took him from New Rockford to Breckenridge where he remained for six years. Then he was transferred to Crookston for four years. Four years ago he was transferred back to Breckenridge where he held the position of roadmaster.
Services were conducted from the Bethel Lutheran church at Wahpeton Tuesday afternoon, March 24th, at 2:30 p.m. An Octette from the church choir sang, “Rock of Ages,” and “One Sweetly Solemn Thought.”
Rev. P. A. Gisvold who officiated paid a fine tribute to the man, when he said, “Torgenrud was a man who was held in high esteem. I have met many who asked me if I knew him. All spoke well of Torgenrud.”
The pallbearers wee: active, Carl Nelson, Carl Grahn, K.J. Olson, Albert Goodijohn, Jack Smith and Halbert Shirley. Honorary: Jos. Schott, Frank Moote, M.M. Bailey, C. H. Hooker, H.E. Donaldson and A. Solja. Interment was in the Wahpeton cemetery.
