Dr. Walker dies here at 86

The funeral for Dr. Edwin P. Walker, 86, long-time Wahpeton resident and veterinarian, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marvin L. Hartmann of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens, Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Dr. Walker died Monday morning at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge.

Edwin P. Walker was born Feb. 5, 1889 at Bowling Green, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Walker. He grew up there and attended local schools. He received his training in veterinary medicine at the University of Toronto from which he graduated April 25, 1911. He served in World War I.

He practiced in central Iowa for a short time before coming to Breckenridge in 1910 where he practiced for a short time, later practicing in the western Dakotas until retiring to Wahpeton in 1941.

He married Dortha Strawbridge Sept. 20, 1911 at Bismarck and later married Rubel Stromquist June 16, 1940 at Willmar, Minn.

During his years of practice, Dr. Walker was a colorful figure in Richland County and covered many miles on back roads. Toward the end of his practice he was serving the third generation of clients.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and Wahpeton American Legion.

Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Dortha Morgan of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Beverley) Jacobchick and Mrs. Gene (Audrey) Pinkney of Wahpeton; two sons, Paul of Bismarck and Roe of Foxhome; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rubel on Jan. 8, 1972, a brother, and a grandson.

Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until time of services at the funeral home. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. and the Wahpeton American Legion will serve at color guard from 7:30-9 p.m.

Organist will be Mrs. Vernon Hektner and vocalist will be Lyle Jacobson.
