Byron E. Woodbury, Veteran Of Spanish-American War, Dies at 85

One of the last survivors of the Spanish-American War died in Wahpeton Monday night.

Byron E. Woodbury, 85, Wahpeton, served nearly a year in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War in 1899.

Funeral services will be at 2 Friday in the Bethel Lutheran Church, Rev. Loyal E. Golf officiating. Interment will be in Christus Gardens Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

The Wahpeton Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold graveside rites.

Mr. Woodbury was born in Montpelier, Vermont, Oct. 9, 1878, and came to Abercrombie at an early age. He enlisted in the service at age of 19 for a two year term. He was mustered out in 1899.

He was attached to Company I of the 1st Infantry Regiment of North Dakota. His military record indicated several battles and engagements he had took part during 1899 in Manila Philippines and other sections of the island.

He married Mathilda Peterson in 1911, after which they farmed at Abercrombie and later at Mooreton. In 1944, they came to Wahpeton where he operated several apartment buildings. Mrs. Woodbury died in May 8, 1960.

He was a member of the Wahpeton VFW. The last three years he resided at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center.

Surviving are three sons and three daughters, Mrs. C. V. (Eleanor) Corliss, Homewood, Ill.; Mrs. Agnes Nelson, Seattle; Herbert, McLeod, N.D.; Ardy, Barney, N.D., Robert, Wahpeton and Mrs. John (Marcia) Clarks, Minneapolis.
