Car Crash Claims Life of Worner Rites Saturday for First Road Victim of 1960

George H. Worner, 73 of Wahpeton died Tuesday in St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge of injuries received Saturday night in a one-car accident north of Dwight on U. S. Highway 81. Death was due to a skull injury.

He had not regained consciousness since the crash and has last been reported by his attending physician as in very critical condition.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Evangelical United Brethern church at Great Bend with Rev. Robert Bechile officiating and Vertin Funeral Home of Wahpeton in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton.

Friends may call at the Vertin Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Friday and until 11 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Worner was a passenger in a car drive by his niece, Ruth Ann Worner of Wahpeton. They were returning to Wahpeton from Jamestown when the car went out of control on frosted pavement and upset in the ditch.

George H. Worner was born Jan. 24, 1887, in Great Bend, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Worner, well known farmer and businessman of that community.

He attended schools and grew to manhood in that community and attended business college at Mankato, Minn., March 2, 1909, he and Alvina Bechtel were united in marriage at Great Bend.

They lived at Great Bend where he farmed and was a grain buyer for an elevator firm until 15 years ago when they came to Wahpeton.

Surviving are Mrs. Worner; two sons, Allen of Rockford, Ill., and Ralph of Great Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Ferve) Ambach of Rockford and Mrs. Merril (Jane) Umbreit of Milwaukee, Wis.; three brothers, Herbert of Wahpeton, Elroy of Chicago and Ezra of Ft. Steelacoom, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Gustav (Hilda) Thiele of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Adolph (Sadie) Beling of Van Nuys, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Besides his parents, two brothers, Oscar and Walter, preceded him in death.
