Harry Wallis Stricken by Heart Attack
Funeral services for Harry Wallis, aged 64, Wahpeton resident since 1936 who died Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock day afternoon at two o’clock from First Congregational church. Dr. S. G. Schick will officiate.
The local man, who was prominent in Odd Fellow activities and a Past Noble Grand, had attended lodge during the evening. Upon his return home he complained of pain and died a short time later of a heart attack. He had never had any heart trouble previously according to his family.
Harry Wallis was born at Clear Lake, Iowa and attended school there, later going to Mason City. He came to North Dakota in charge of a pole setting crew for Northwestern Bell Telephone company and later attended Ellendale Normal School.
He worked with his brother in a contracting business at Ellendale for a time, then went into the County Judge’s office there where he was employed for many years. He became court stenographer for Judge W. H. Hutchinson in 1932 and in 1936 moved his family to Wahpeton. In 1927 he became employed by Hoppert’s in Wahpeton Plumbing & Heating Co remaining there since.
He married Emma Bjornstad in 1914 at Ellendale and they became the parents of two sons: Donald of St. Paul and Dale of this city. There are four grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Jack Sullivan, of McGregor N.D., and two brothers, V. M. Wallis of Clear Lake, Iowa and Eward, of Ellendale.
Mr. Wallis had several hobbies. He enjoyed his lodge wok and he was for many years an active gardener raising gladioli of fine quality and belonging to a number of gladioli clubs. He had an unusually good memory and enjoyed following the baseball leagues. On the evening of his death he had watched the world series pictures shown at the Odd Fellows meeting played several hands of whist and joined the lodge group at lunch.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be lodge brothers: Walter Johnson, C. M. Comstock, John Flaa, Calmar Carlson, Clifford Werner and Elroy Wegener.
The body is lying in state at the Vertin Funeral home.
All Odd Fellows attending the funeral of the Financial Secretary will please be at the IOOF Hall at 1:00 o’clock sharp, Friday to go to the church as a group says Dale McMichael Noble Grand.
