WALTER FUNERAL WILL BE HELD TODAY AT 2 Esther Got Beyond Her Depth While Swimming in Black River; Body Here Thursday

The funeral of fifteen-year-old Esther Walter, who was drowned Sunday while swimming in the Black river, near Ironwood, Mich.,will be held from St. Peter’s Evangelical Church, the Rev. C. T. Sturm officiating. Esther was confirmed in that church this spring.

The double tragedy in which Esther and her brother-in-law, Frank Spang, were drowned happened in the Black river Sunday. The Spangs and Esther were on a swimming party, and Esther was the first one in the water. She had learned to swim a little lately and in stating out got beyond her depth. When she attempted to touch bottom and could not she became frightened and exhausted. Frank, husband of Esther’s sister, Ruth, plunged into the water after her and was carried down by the frightened girl.

F. J. Walter, the father, started Sunday evening with three children, Wilfred of Fargo and Elmer and Cecelia of Wahpeton, and drove to Ironwood, arriving there Monday. Mr. Walter arrived in Wahpeton with the body yesterday morning on No. 9 and the children drove the car back, arriving Wednesday.

The Frank Spang body was taken to Huron, S. D., Mr. Spang’s parental home, and the funeral was to be held yesterday or this morning. Mrs. Spang has made no plans for the future. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of all for their sad loss.
