Mrs. W. M. Walton Dies Sunday After Brief Illness
Services to Be Conducted Tuesday Afternoon at Episcopal church and Burial at Fairview
Mrs. W. M. Walton, wife of the pastor of Trinity Episcopal church here, died at six Sunday morning after an illness lasting three weeks. Funeral services are to be conducted Tuesday afternoon from the church, with Rt. Rev. D. H. Atwill, Bishop of North Dakota officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery here.
Jesse Stephen Cairns was born Feb. 24, 1867, at Aberdeen, Scotland, and as a baby, with her parents. Rev. and Mrs. John Cairns immigrated to eastern Canada. Rev. Cairns was a Presbyterian minister and was one of the first missionaries of his church to come into Manitoba.
On March 23, 1888, she was united in marriage with Rev. W. M. Walton at Marringhurst, Manitoba. To this union were born four children; Mrs. J. F. Gill, Kincaid, Sask., Canada, Alice of Wahpeton, Helen of Wahpeton and John, who died in infancy.
Rev. and Mrs. Walton came to the United States in 1900 and have lived in this country ever since with the exception of five years which were spent in British Columbia. They came to Wahpeton in 1915 and Wahpeton has been their home since that time. They spent five years of the time since 1915 serving the church in Brainerd and Wadena, but Wahpeton was really their home.
Two brothers John W. Cairns and James of Carnduff, Sask., survive as do three grandchildren and one great grandchild. John W. is a twin brother. All of the children are in Wahpeton and the two brothers are expected to be here to attend the services.
The body will be in state in the church Tuesday morning where friends may view it. Pallbearers will be members of the Bishop’s committee of Trinity church, W.H. McClintock, George Hunkins, Sr., George Hunkins, Jr., L.E. Guess, C. B. Askew and Millard RIckert. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Wahpeton.
