Obituary
Rev. W. Walton Dies Monday In Wahpeton
The Reverend W. M. Walton, who has been hospitalized for several weeks, died Monday morning at Wahpeton Nursing Home where he had been cared for the past two weeks. The Holy Communion and Burial Office will be held Thursday morning at ten o’clock at Trinity Episcopal church, with the Right Reverend Richard Emery, Bishop of North Dakota, celebrant and many of the clergy from the state attending.
Rev. W. M. Walton came to Wahpeton in 1915 to become priest in charge of Trinity Episcopal church. He served in that capacity until his retirement with the exception of five years spent in Brainerd and Wadena.
A graduate of Seabury Divinity school at Faribault, he was ordained a priest in Moorhead in 1898, where his father was pastor of St. John’s Episcopal church. He had charges in Cannon Falls, Minn., Bathgate, N.D., Davenport, Wash., and Vernie, B. C., before coming here.
William Walton was born in India, August 21, 1855, where his father was then in government service. He was educated in England, graduating from King’s College, London.
He came to this country in 1883 and then went to Canada where he married Jessie S. Cairns in Marringhurts, Manitoba March 23, 1888. They became the parents of four children, Mary, Mrs. J. C. Gill, Miss Alice Walton, Wahpeton, Mrs. Helen Walton died in 1951 and a son, John died in 1892.
Rev. Walton was a member of the Masonic lodge, Royal Arch Masons and Knights Templar. He was an honorary canon of Gethsemane Cathedral in Fargo.
The family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Episcopal church where a permanent memorial has been established.
Interment will be made in the family lot at Fairview Cemetery beside his wife who preceded him in death 16 years ago.
