23 Months Old Tot Hit By Train, Dies At Hospital
Accident Occurred Wednesday Near Child’s Farm Home
David Ward, 23-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Ward of rural Wahpeton, died at 7:43 Wednesday night as a result of injuries received, it is believed, of being struck by a train after he wandered away from home.
The child was missed shortly after noon from the farm yard in which he had been playing.
The father, who had been working on the farm of his father, Elmer Ward, was called home and a posse’ was organized. The men began searching the fields and roadsides near the home. The child’s father, who was searching in his automobile discovered the tot shortly before 3 o’clock lying on the tracks of a Northern Pacific branch line.
The youngster was rushed to St. Mary hospital here by his grandfather, Elmer Ward, his uncle, Raymond Ward, Robert Smith and Lester Smith. X-rays at the hospital revealed a fractured skull with only minor bruises on his body and face.
A Northern Pacific representative who is here investigating said that the body was found about ½ mile from the farm home and believed that the child had apparently walked south down the township road. Upon reaching the crossing the child must have walked west along the tracks.
A small shepherd dog was accompanying the youngster. The pup was also killed; its body was discovered about 100 feet east of where the boy was found. The railroad official said that a train passed there at 2:30 p.m. but the county sheriff reports that neither the engineer H. H. Hurley, or the conductor, E. Clary, had seen anything of the child.
The Wards have another child, six weeks old.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran church, Rev. Henry Fry will officiate and burial will be made in Fairview cemetery. Other survivors besides his parents include: his grandfather, Elmer Ward; his grandmother, Mrs. Mathilda Kressin of Wahpeton and one sister Kathryn.
The body is at the Vertin Funeral Home in Wahpeton.
