Mr. Wefel, 83, was born Jan. 18, 1889, in Clarksville, Iowa, the son of Henry and Alvina (Wedeking) Wefel. He grew up in Iowa and served in peace time in the Marine Corps in the Philippines and China prior to World War I. He married Mathilda Schmadeke Aug. 29, 1912, at Pleasant Valley, Iowa. The couple lived in Iowa until 1920 when they moved to a farm in Mooreton Township, rural Wahpeton, and farmed until 1944. They moved to Wahpeton and he was employed by the Otter Tail Power Company at the Kidder Station until his retirement in 1955. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

In addition, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Louis (Josie) Sinram and Mrs. Leslie (Matilda) Swick, both of Clarksville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Mrs. Wefel, 83, the former Mathilda Schmadeke, was born Aug. 9, 1889, at Pleasant Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Wilhamina (Barkhousen) Schmadeke. She was educated in Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. August L. Wefel of Wahpeton were discovered dead in their home at 610 North Eighth Street Tuesday afternoon by their son, Edwin Wefel.

The deaths are being investigated by Richland County and Wahpeton authorities. Wahpeton fireman and police were on the scene investigating but no probable cause was pinpointed.

Fireman checked the chimney from the roof and the sewer outlet to see if either were plugged but both appeared to be open, officials said. Firemen were to continue additional checking Wednesday on the furnace inside the house, Assistant Police Chief Gary Manning said.

Richland Conty coroner Dr. Perry Engstrom who investigated said it will be several days before a cause of death will be determined.
