Obituary

Ruth D. Whipps

Services for Ruth D. Whipps, 89, Wahpeton, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wahpeton United Church of Christ with the Rev. J. Edward Krueger officiating. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening at Vertin's Chapel in Wahpeton, and at the church one hour before services.

Miss Whipps died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge.

She was born in Minneapolis on June 29, 1886 and moved to Hankinson as a child, and later to Nashua. Her family returned to Minneapolis, where she graduated from high school in 1906. She attended the North Dakota State School of Science and began work at the Citizens National Bank (First National Bank) in 1908 after graduating from NDSSS.

She never married. In 1932 she was taken hostage in a robbery of the Citizens National Bank and was wounded in the hip by shotgun blasts from local merchants who fired after the getaway car.

Miss Whipps and another bank employee had been held on the running board of the vehicle by the thieves, later identified as the Alvin Carpess gang.

Miss Whipps continued to live in Wahpeton, retiring from the bank in 1951 after 43 years there. She spent the last three years of her life in the Wahpeton Retirement Home.

She has no known survivors, and was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, the PEO, and a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
