Obituary
H. W. Worner, Former Mayor Of Wahpeton, Dies on Sunday
Herbert T. Worner, 75, mayor of Wahpeton from 1954-58, died unexpectedly early Sunday at St. Francis Home in Breckenridge. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Rev Walter D. Elmer will officiate at the services. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at Vertin’s-Wahpeton Funeral Home all day Tuesday and Wednesday until noon and from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church Wednesday.
Born in Great Bend, Feb 3, 1889, of pioneer parents, George and Augusta Worner, Mr. Worner attended area schools and was graduated from Mankato (Minn) Commercial College in 1909.
On Nov. 11, 1913, he married Eliza S. Radtke. He managed the Great Bend elevator and later purchase the elevator and implement company at Tyler.
They moved to Wahpeton in 1924 and he also purchased elevators at Brushvale Minn., and Dwight.
In 1941 he started the Worner Printing Co. here now operated by a son, Franklin
Mr. Worner was a member of the city council from 1950 to 194. He was a member of the IOOF and Eagles lodges here.
He retired in 1958 and had been a resident of St Francis Home for the past year. Mr. and Mrs. Worner celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Nov. 13 of last year.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Clifford and Franklin of Wahpeton; Herbert L., and William of Breckenridge, and three daughters Mrs. John (Hazel) Vaughn, Breckenridge; Mrs. Kermit (Joyce) Lee, Wahpeton, and Ruth Ann, Jamestown. There are 38 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ezra of Stillicoon, Wash., and Elroy, Great Bend and two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Thiele Fargo and Mrs. Sadie Beling, Van Nuys, Calif.
Six grandchildren will serve as the active pallbearers. They are Michael Worner, Roger Worner, Douglas Vaughn, Craig Vaughn, Lanny Worner and William Worner, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will include Virgil Sturdevant, Allan (Bud) Torgeson, Earl W. Oliver, Ed Werre, Al Petersen, William Quine, John Flaa, Dr. Jack Pfister, John Randall and George Soltis.
