POPULAR SALESMAN ANSWERS FINAL CALL C. R. RICE, MARSHALL-WELLS STAR MAN, DIED SUNDAY

PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA THE CAUSE Masonic Funeral Held Tuesday Afternoon-Deceased Had Lived in Richland County Over 15 Years-Well Known Over State Cyrus B. Rice, the well known representative of the Marshall-Wells company of Duluth, died at his home on eighth street in this city Sunday morning, May 7th, at five minutes past one. Death was caused by pernicious anaemia. Mr. Rice had been in failing health for some time, and had been taking medical treatments off and on for a number months. Five weeks ago he was compelled to give up his work on the road temporarily, as every one thought. His health did not improve, but on the contrary, became steadily worse, the peculiar disease refusing to yield to any treatment. Cyrus B. Rice was born in Glenn’s Falls, N. Y., on May 18, 1862, being just under fifty-four years of age at the time of death. He came to Hankinson, this county, about sixteen years ago, and in 1901 was married to Miss Hattie Thacker of that city , who survives him. The Rice’s moved to Wahpeton eleven years ago, since which time they made their home here continuously. During all this time Mr. Rice has been employed by the Marshall-Wells Company of Duluth as salesman, covering a large territory in the southeastern part of the state and his work made him very well known throughout the territory. He was considered to be one of the best salesman in the entire Marshall-Wells sales force.

Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rice, Donald and Dorothy, who are twins, now 14 years of age, and little Darleen, who is ten years old. Besides the wife and children, there are two sisters, Miss Emma B. Rice of New York City, and Mrs. Alice V. D. Rice of Glenn’s Falls, N. Y., and two brothers, Geo. B. Rice of New Port, R. I. and M. B. Rice of Saratoga, N. Y. The long distance prevented the presence of any of the brothers or sisters at the funeral.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, May 9th, at 2:30, from the Masonic hall, Wahpeton Lodge, No 15, A.F. & A.M. had charge of the funeral, Rev. W. M. Walton speaking the sermon. The pall bearers were Chas. E. Wolfe, C. J. Kachelhoffer, E. A. Hill, E. H. Myhra, JohnCarr and R. C. Mitton. The funeral was vey impressive, and the casket containing all that was moral of Mr. Rice, was literally buried in a most profuse display of cut flowers and designs sent by loving friends and the various orders of which deceased was a member. The Blue Lodge and the Commander attended the funeral in a body and escorted the remains to the final resting place in Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Rice was a member of the Blue Lodge, A.F. & A.M. at Hankinson, the Chapter, R.N.A. at Lidgerwood, and the Commander at Wahpeton. He belongs also to Zurah Shrine at Minneapolis, the B.P.O.E. at Fergus Falls and theU.C.T, No. 63 of Minneapolis.

The out of town people present at funeral were many, among them Mr. F. F. Bolton, sales manager of the Marshall-Wells company, and the following salesmen: Jack Heitman, of Grand Forks, R. C. Conover of Fargo and Mr. McEvers of Duluth; Dr. and Mrs. Sorkness of Fargo and Mr. and Mrs. Larson of Valley City.

Mr. Rice was a familiar figure in this and every other town all over his territory, and his presence will long be missed by the many who had learned to look forward with pleasure to his visits.
