J. A. Rickert Dead; Was Pioneer in Co. CAME TO THIS COUNTY IN FALL OF 1886 Was Merchant at Lidgerwood Prominent in County Politics for Many Years, Having Been Treasurer and Sheriff, also President of Wahpeton School Board. Jacob Allison Rickert was born in Trumbell County, Ohio, near Sharon, Pennsylvania, on March 8, 1855, the son Felix and Eliza Rickert. His parents

removed to Olmstead Co., Minn., in 1856, his father taking a homestead northwest of Rochester on which he resided until his death. Mr. Rickert received his education in the rural schools of Olmstead County and at a school in Rochester known as the Rochester Academy. He taught school in Olmstead County for several years. He came to Dakota Territory in 1879, but returned to Minnesota and was united in marriage to Annie Elizabeth Bird in 1880. To this union seven children were born; J. A. Rickert of Tracy, Minnesota, Mrs. Frances E. Aspinwall, Mrs. Sarah B. McMichael, Miss Blanche Rickert, M. F. Rickert, Mrs. Ruth Hoffman and J. E. Rickert all of Wahpeton, N. D. Mr. Rickert with his wife and two children left Minnesota in 1884 for Dakota, making the trip with a yoke of oxen and a covered wagon. They stopped at McCauleyville, Minn., where he taught school during the winter of 1884-1885. In the spring of 1885 they continued their trip with the ox team to Emmons County, North Dakota, where Mr. Rickert took a homestead which he owned until recent years. In the fall of 1885 the Rickert family drove the ox team back to Richland County where Mr. Rickert acquired a tree claim and preemption near Wyndmere. In 1886 he removed to Lidgerwood, where he embarked in the general mercantile business in partnership with M. Lynch and W. H. Morgan. Mr. Morgan soon withdrew from the partnership, but the firm of Rickert & Lynch continued for many years. J. A. Rickert, oldest son of the deceased, and J. W. Stiteler were the first scholars enrolled in the Lidgerwood schools. Mr. Rickert was elected county commissioner of Richland County in 1888. He was elected county treasurer in 1890, and removed his family to Wahpeton in the spring of 1891. He was re-elected treasurer in 1892 and was elected sheriff in 1894. After retiring from the office of sheriff on January 1, 1897 Mr. Rickert devoted his time to his private business interests. He was president of the Board of Education of Wahpeton for a number of years.

His death occurred at St. John’s hospital, Fargo, Wednesday evening, January 29th. The remains were brought to Wahpeton where on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock Rev. W. M. Walton of Trinity Episcopal church conducted the funeral service at the Rickert home on Eighth street. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
