C.D. Rittenhouse Dies After Long Illness Saturday
Funeral Services for Former Postmaster and Druggist Conducted Monday Afternoon
Came to State in 1879 From New Jersey
Settled at Wahpeton in 1881 After Living in Forman, N.D., For Short Time as a Druggist
Claude D. Rittenhouse, former Wahpeton postmaster and pharmacy owner, passed away at the St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge Saturday afternoon at 4:45. He had been ill over a period of time and had been in the hospital for eleven days. Private funeral services were held this (Monday) afternoon at 2:30 from the Schmitt & Olson funeral home. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery. Rev. W. M. Walton of the Trinity Episcopal church officiated.
Born September 23, 1857 at Sandy Ridge, N.J., Claude D. Rittenhouse lived in the east until 1879 when he came to North Dakota going to Bismarck where he lived for two years coming to Wahpeton in 1881.
Arriving at Wahpeton Mr. Rittenhouse secured employment in one of the county offices. Seven years later he returned east and his marriage to Miss MaBelle Williamson, took place in the state of New Jersey.
Mr. and Mrs. Rittenhouse established their home in Forman and lived there a year when they moved to Milnor where Mr. Rittenhouse purchased a drug store and which he operated for three years.
In the spring of 1893 Mr. and Mrs. Rittenhouse moved to Wahpeton and a year later Mr. Rittenhouse opened a drug store in the present location of the Huppeler restaurant. Later he became the owner of the drug store now the location of Bugbee’s Drug Store.
He operated this drug store until 1915 when he disposed of the property and in 1916 was named as Wahpeton’s postmaster. This position he held until 1921 and since then has lived a retired life
For many years M Rittenhouse was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rittenhouse, a daughter, Miss Jean Rittenhouse of Minneapolis and a brother, Albert H. Rittenhouse of Flemingon, N.J., and two nephews Leon H. Rittenhouse of Haverford, Penn., and Hawley H. Rittenhouse of Flemington, N.J.
Pallbearers today were H. Hodel, Joe Voves, W. A. Farnsworth, S. H. Murray, Frank Breuer and Maurice Nellermoe.
