Farm Home Burns on Eve of Father’s Funeral Rites
The father of the family dead and awaiting burial, Mrs. Julia Berkey, living ten miles northeast of Breckenridge was again the victim of tragic circumstances when her farm home burned to the ground and everything in it was completely and utterly destroyed. Mrs. Berkey was so seriously burned that she was taken to the hospital.
The mother, Mrs. Berkey was able to attend the funeral at the Church of God in Wahpeton on Monday despite serious burns on her face, arms and hands. The father, Frank Townsend Berkey, died at St. Francis hospital in Breckenridge at about nine o’clock Friday evening. Funeral services were to be held on Monday.
From some undiscovered source, fire spread in the Berkey home on Sunday and the mother, frantic to save some of her remaining possessions as well as personal belongings sacred to the memory of her husband, dashed into the burning structure and endeavored to bring them out. Her efforts were in vain and she was so severely burned as to endanger her life.
When the funeral was held on Monday, however, Mrs. Berkey was able to attend the services swathed in bandages and suffering from the burns. Three children, Walter and Gail and Mrs. L. J. Vollrath, all of Breckenridge, survive the father with Mrs. Townsend. The family have been residents of Breckenridge vicinity since 1902. Mr. Townsend was born September 16, 1868 at Grand Rapids, Mich.
