Archie Boumont dies Wednesday

Longtime Wahpeton resident and former Otter Tail Power Co. Kidder Station Employee Achille (Archie) Boumont, 96, Wahpeton, died Wednesday, June 15, at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge.

Mr. Boumont was probably best known for his volunteer work in his later years and his friendly manner with customers and employees at the former Richland County Co-op service station, 924 Dakota Ave., Wahpeton. He helped many friends and neighbors by repairing lawn mowers and the like.

He was also an avid gardener and bowler having bowled two perfect 300 games.

He was born April 1, 1887 at Brussels, Belgium. Raised and educated in Belgium, he then went to work on a ship as a welder. When the ship docked in the United States he decided to stay, later moving to Watford City, N.D., where he managed a meat market.

He later moved to Brushvale, Minn., where he operated a blacksmith's shop. He married Hilda Carlson in March, 1923 at Galchutt. On July 28, 1929 he began work with Otter Tail Power Co., as a welder and mechanic at the former Kidder Station in Wahpeton. His wife died Oct. 31, 1941. He retired July 3, 1952.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Strand, Wahpeton; two sons, Dennis, Wahpeton; and Allen, Valley City; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest who was killed in action during World War II; two brothers and a sister, all in Belgium.

Casket bearers will be Stanley Beach, Harry Grinager, Kenneth Hansen, Elmer Mikkelson, Ronald Prchal, Dale Hinsverk and Ted Hein.

The funeral will be at 2 Friday at Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Donald Barsness officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.
