Obituary

Albert Barina, 87

Al Barina, 87, Wahpeton, N.D., died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at his residence in Wahpeton.

The Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14 at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton.

There will be visitation with the family one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Arrangements are with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Albert Barina was born in 1920 in Rothsay, Minn., area, the son of Josephine and Joseph Barina,

Drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1942, Al spent two and a half years in India as part of the B-29 Bomber ground crew, before going to the islands of Tinjan and Okinawa. Discharged in 1945, he had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and was a B-29 ground crew chief. In the last two years of his life, Al's memories of his World War II service were a great source of pride if not comfort for him. A lifetime VFW member, he was also a past Cootie Grand Commander.

In 1948, Al went to work for Sturdevan's Auto Electric as their wheel aligner and in the "pit" as a front-end/frame man. His trademark, besides a somewhat crusty but honest personality, was the ever present cigar. Al always viewed Virgil Sturdevant as not only his boss, but as a good friend. He stayed with the shop for 35 years until his retirement in 1983.

An avid fisherman and hunter, deer season was always a special time in Al's household even after he stopped hunting at age 68. His last hunt was a deer hunt with son Mike and long-time friend Ralph Mercer. He died the morning of opening day.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret; sons Mike and wife Henelia of Wahpeton, and Dan and wife Lanissa of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren Kyle, Jared, Joey, Taylor and Tommy; two sisters Frances of Breckenridge, Minn., and Caroline of Windom, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
